Quilliam works to challenge Islamist extremism and promote democratic culture in Muslim-majority societies and communities. The current uprisings in the MENA region mean that change on this agenda is more likely now than perhaps any other time in recent history. The spontaneously emergence of pro-democracy movements has dealt a severe blow to the Islamist narrative, and their vision is now being publically scrutinised more and more. The popularisation and adoption of democratic culture in Muslim majority countries, combined with policy changes at governmental level in the EU and North America, will be critical in bringing about the much needed change these regions deserve.
In Muslim majority countries, democratic culture needs to be re-branded so that it becomes fashionable for young people whilst Islamist extremism needs to become as unfashionable as communism now is. Currently this is not the case in a number of Muslim-Majority countries. It is with this in mind that we seek to seed pro-democracy and anti-extremism initiatives in key countries around the world.
