Quilliam’s Progress Report 2009 - 2010

Quilliam’s Annual Report 2009-2010: showcasing Quilliam’s second year’s achievements

20 April 2010

To mark Quilliam’s second anniversary, today sees the release of Quilliam’s Progress Report 2009-2010 (April-April) that showcases our second year’s accomplishments.

Over these two years, the national debate surrounding Islamist extremism has changed and the terms of engagement have shifted. Terrorism is no longer viewed in a vacuum, but increasingly in the context of Islamist-inspired ideology and the socio-political dislocation of young activist Muslims. The British government now has more robust policies in place to help prevent the unchallenged ascendancy of extremist narratives that serve as a prelude to violence. It is now recognised that factors including ideology, networks, perceived grievances and identity issues among young Muslims lead to radicalisation.

Instead of seeking to ban extremist groups, which fails to address the root ideological problem, Quilliam seeks to beat ideas with stronger ideas. We have consistently pioneered new and effective ways in which to challenge, expose and sideline such extremism. Quilliam’s Progress Report 2009-2010 provides solid examples of the work we are doing and the impact that we are having in countering extremism in the public domain. This year, we have:

- Trained over 1000 public sector workers in countering extremism (see the Training pages)

- Run a project in Pakistan that has reached over 5000 students, empowering them in the battle against extremist ideas (see the Pakistan Project pages)

- Held eight high-profile events with leading MPs, political-thinkers and activists on key topics of concern or interest relating to the counter-terrorism agenda (see the Events pages)

- Released eight widely circulated research publications on issues of counter-extremism and integration (see the Publications pages)

- Initiated a series of outreach events at British universities and reached out to Muslim communities in the UK and beyond (see the Outreach pages)

- Raised awareness, reassured the general public and explained issues of extremism in the public space through regular media appearances (see the Public Messaging pages)

As we at Quilliam enter our third year, there is still a long way to go – for politicians, civil society, media outlets and Muslim communities too – but we are on our way.
