On 20th October Quilliam Director Maajid Nawaz participated in a panel discussion on Afghanistan as part of the British-German Journalists' Conference in the House of Lords. The discussion was entitled "Is Afghanistan worth the fight?"
Other panellists were: Professor Michael Clarke, Director of the Royal United Services Institute (RUSI), Eric Joyce MP and Kim Sengupta, defence and diplomatic editor at The Independent. The audience was made up of a group of 14 British and German journalists.
Maajid spoke about the need for Afghanistan to:
1. Introduce a civil society surge.
2. A counter-ideology policy including de-radicalization.
3. A firm commitment from Government to implement and see the project through to the end.
