Update from GAU Syria, March 2009
"GAU work in Syria has focused thus far on establishing and developing key relationships with influential religious and academic figures and institutions in the country, with a view to holding talks, seminars and workshops at universities and religious seminaries. These events will involve British Muslims speaking alongside a Syrian representative of the partner body or a leading Syrian religious scholar well known and respected by the student audience. The principle of mutuality is central to our work, coordinating a joint response to the threat of extremism.
Our proposals have received an enthusiastic welcome, particularly from Syrian religious foundations, and we look forward to engaging with student groups across the country, tackling the issues of misrepresentation and radicalization, and in addition emphasizing that Muslims form a valued, principled and integral part of contemporary British society".
